Sound of silence & other scribblings

Young Soldier

Young soldier doesn't want to kill
Young soldier did the worse thing

Young soldier - with tears in his eyes
and pride in his heart
a gun in his hands
moving towards the promising land

Young soldier doesn't want to fight
alone
Young soldier has got so much to fear
alone

Marching firmly through the mud
hands and face covered in blood
cracking branches under his feet
Young soldier is in pain so deep

Young soldier doesn't want to kill
Young soldier did the worse thing

After having a small conversation tonight, well it wasn't exactly a conversation, it was part of the evening.... a girl trying to convince me she could play the main role of my upcoming shorty. She was like improvising on a given situation as to show me how she can act.
Anyway, so I explained her in short what my shorty was about, I gave her a situation and she had to make up the dialogues talking to someone else at the table.

While she was talking I was thinking about how many words, "empty words" she used to get through the conversation. That's when I noticed that the thing I like about dialogues is actually the 'silence'. You know those awkward moments, intense in emotion even though nothing is being said. That's why I'm looking for a girl who can act in silence. I need someone who speaks with her face, her eyes.
Dialogues should be short and effective. I want the dialogues of my story to be "dry" but so overwhelming. Recognizable, but at the same time I want them to be everything we often think, but never say.

I mean, think about it, how many things a day do you say that are completely pointless. How many times do you try to explain something another way just because you think the other person didn't get you, so you try it another way...why try so hard. What's the point in being understood. Hmm maybe that goes too far, but think of it, why do we try so hard to get ourselves through?

Communication is great, but why try so hard? Everyone has got a point of view, obviously, sometimes a different one, so what makes you think the other one is interested in your point of view?

We should enjoy silence. Silence makes us (not me) uncomfortable. Why try to hide the silence, when silence itself speaks so well by itself?

Anyway, before I go to far in this "stop talking in vain" thing let me share something I didn't share with you yet. A piece of my Italian poetry. I rarely write in Italian. This one was written while I was in Italy, early July this year. I figure my ex was the main inspiration, but I was quite influenced by some situations around me. My sister's divorce, the rumors my cousin wouldn't be in love with her husband anymore, people living together but not knowing each other at all. It made me sad to think one could forget why one had fallen in love (or out) with someone. It's about a (forgotten) love, doubts, memories, maybe even regrets... the past.

Ti ho amato, credo
tanto o forse no
forse un poco
non mi ricordo
Da tanto tempo
vedi ormai
siamo ormai
Una strada lunga
lunga quanto la distanza
tra me & te
A volte vicino A volte lontano
Ti ho amato
Ti amo ancora credo
o ne sono sicura
a volte no
forse un poco
Come te da tanto tempo
ma chi sei, chi sono - io
Io che ti amo, credo
Non mi ricordo.

Even when I read this piece, there's silence involved. I like to hear the sound that resonates after each word. I like to hear how my brain catches its vibrations and transforms it into a well defined feeling. Maybe that's why I think words are important, and why we should carefully choose our words when talking (serious). Way too often we throw words at each other without thinking of it's effects. We think about nice things to say, we think of the meaning the whole sentence has. But rarely we think about the silence we put before or after the words composing our sentence. That silence that explains much more than a whole text about a subject.

I love you - smile. Sounds differently than...
I........... - serious face, breath in, look down then look up again - I .....love you - smile.

Sorry for the lame example, but I think it's an easy thing to relate to. I mean we've all seen thousands of movies where these simple words are used and every time in a different way. Anyway, all this..... to say what? Nothing.

This post should've been an empty one to say what I actually meant.
